Community Society Community Involvement
Commitment to healthy living is one of the Sidney Integrated Wellness Community Society’s (SIWC) mandates. It believes in giving back to the community and is sponsoring a family for the Christmas season through the Food Bank. Donations received from members have been most generous, which shows the SIWC is heading in the right direction.
Other community events include the local Summer Market and the Organics Festival. SWIC creates ample wellness education opportunities through a variety of projects, including the Annual Sidney Health Fair, regular monthly meetings for members, a resource directory of wellness providers and practitioners based on the Saanich Peninsula, an interactive website, and a locally available speaker’s roster. This year, it is introducing three new exciting projects:
-
‘Healthy Hours’ is a monthly meeting that invites wellness enthusiast to meet with like-minded members of the community at large.
-
Studio Tours will offer you opportunities to tour the facilities of community wellness providers and practitioners. Talk with them and find out the latest and greatest on healthy living.
-
The pilot project of "Creatures of habitat - Days of action 2009" is a first-time opportunity that brings students to the head of the class. It’s an all-environmental fair that has students - future community leaders - being educated on environmental issues, practices and problems. This breakthrough event will also be linked with an amazing project called Community Student Interviews (CSI), that arranges educational speakers to schools leading up to the event for Creatures of Habitat. There are a number of interactive components that will educate students and provide proactive solutions to environmental practices that help, rather than harm, the community. This initiative is a continuation of the SIWC’s commitment to educating students throughout the community. Visit www.creaturesofhabitat.ca for more information.
